The Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC AE is a fast, wide angle, manual focus prime lens compatible with full frame cameras, as well as APS-C or smaller sensors. This Auto Exposure (AE) chip version of the Samyang 35mm features an electronic circuit which allows for full control of exposure parameters accessible from the camera. On Nikon bodies this functionality includes i-TTL flash communication and EXIF data with all Nikon Digital SLR cameras (both full frame FX and cropped DX bodies).

Now Samyang offer this capability to Canon EOS cameras, the AE version being chipped for full AE functionality and focus confirmation with Canon DSLR bodies.

Producing excellent resolution and sharpness throughout the image equal or exceeding lenses 3 times as expensive, the Samyang 35mm lens is truly a professional class lens at a affordable price.

On a full frame Nikon FX and Canon EOS DSLRs the 35mm focal length has universal applications with the fast f1.4 aperture, including journalism, portraiture and low light photography. With its high resolution, it is also popular for landscape photography. When mounted on a Nikon camera with DX sensor, or APS-C sized Canon sensors, will become a popular, multitasking prime lens of around a standard 50mm to 55mm.

The wide apertures of the Samyang 35mm provide beautiful bokeh, (the character of out-of-focus areas) which is perfect for portrait type applications, or photography where ultra smooth out of focus backgrounds or foregrounds is desired. This technique helps to separate the subject from the background giving very pleasing and professional results, particularly in portrait or photojournalism photography. Aided by its 8 aperture bladed design, the smoothness of the bokeh provided by the Samyang 35mm is excellent. Although bokeh character is a personal preference various independent tests and users rate the Samyang 35mm lens as one of the best lenses regardless of cost or manufacturer when it comes to its bokeh character.

The optical design of the Samyang 35 mm f1.4 UMC lens is twelve elements arranged in ten groups and includes two elements with high refractive index, which helps reduces its weight and dimensions to a moderate level for a full frame capable lens. The inclusion of an aspherical optical element minimizes helps reduce lateral chromatic aberration, UMC multi-layer coatings provides high contrast and faithful colour reproduction. The design incorporates floating lens elements allowing to preserve high image quality with minimum focusing distance.

It features a wide comfortable manual focus ring and is perfectly adapted to most photographic applications. Accurate for focus critical situations can be achieved through use of focusing in live view mode, available to most newer Nikon camera models.

There are increasing numbers of users using Canon and Nikon DSLRs for filming High Definition (HD) video and manual lenses allows users precise focus control during filming.
