Discover a new way to be true to your vision.

The newly reimagined Tamron F/2.8 fast telephoto zoom lens with faster autofocus and Vibration Compensation exceeds your highest expectations.

Expand your image of fast telephoto shooting

The new SP70-200mm F/2.8 G2 (Model A025) telephoto lens reimagines the highly acclaimed Model A009 with enhanced optical performance, improved VC (Vibration Compensation), faster AF speed and accuracy, and shortened MOD (Minimum Object Distance) for greater flexibility. What’s more, compatibility with Tamron tele converters provides additional focal length.

In keeping with the SP series’ innovative technology, the lens is designed to be durable, flexible and resilient enough to rise to any occasion.

High resolution meets beautiful bokeh

Every aspect of the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 (Model A025) zoom has been improved, providing high image quality and enhanced bokeh throughout. Optical design features include XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and LD (Low Dispersion) glass to eliminate chromatic aberrations across the entire zoom range, ensuring optimum resolution – even at the edges. eBAND Coating designed exclusively for this new zoom offers superior anti-reflection properties, greatly minimising flare and ghosting. And refined bokeh provides spectacular background effects from nearly any angle.

MOD reduced to 0.95m

Improvements to the new SP 70-200mm F/2.8 G2 extend well into the lens barrel. Tamron has reduced the MOD from 1.3m (50.7 in) in our older model to 0.95m (37.4 in), allowing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.1. The shorter MOD, coupled with the superb optical performance of this new zoom, allows you to significantly broaden your range of expression.

Accuracy in action

The USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) ring-type motor, along with two high-performance microcomputers, ensures excellent focusing speed and accuracy. The Full-time Manual Focus override allows you to make fine adjustments while using AF, without having to switch from AF to MF mode.

Keep it steady with VC equal to 5 stops

Tamron’s best-in-class VC* image stabilisation performance is equivalent to 5 stops**, according to CIPA standards. Plus, this lens offers a choice of three VC modes, including one exclusively for panning. Now you can match the VC mode to your shooting conditions and enjoy sharp, jitter-free handheld shooting—even in low light.

Two exclusive new tele converters

Two exclusive tele converters, which match the optics of the new SP 70-200mm G2, offer 1.4x and 2.0x magnification, and provide a maximum zoom range up to 400mm. These new tele converters extend focal length of the master lens, making it possible to take pictures in farther telephoto ranges.

Other features

Vibration Compensation

Stabilises camera blur for sharp images in low light

If you're shooting handheld when light is low, especially with longer lenses, your camera's shutter speeds can extend to a point where the image may turn out blurred due to camera shake. Tamron's VC tracks this shake and neutralises it for sharper images without the inconvenience of a tripod or the artificiality of a flash, in much lower light.

Tamron's unique VC mechanism uses a proprietary actuator and algorithms to deliver an extremely stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking. The tri-axial system uses three driving coils to move internal optical components within the VC lens electromagnetically, based on signals originating from three ball bearings, made from either steel or ceramic. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the balls, achieving smooth movement with minimal friction.

Tamron's original moving magnet system employed a heavy magnet positioned near the moving VC lens element. The improved VC reverses the positions of magnet and coil and attaches the VC optic to the coil. This moving coil is lighter than the magnet, and as this reduces the load on the drive system, both the VC unit and the lens are lighter and more compact.

* From a focus distance of 3 metres the benefits of VC gradually decrease as the focus distance becomes closer.

Ultrasonic Silent Drive

'Travelling waves' generate a fast, smooth AF movement

This extremely quiet motor is ideal for photography of events, weddings, theatre or musical performances, as well as crucial moments on the golf course – any situation where autofocus noise is obtrusive. Major improvements in autofocus response and tracking ability over standard DC motors make for instantaneous focusing and spontaneous shooting of rapidly moving subjects.

Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic is a material that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator. By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produce simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective travelling waves’, which move around the circumference of the ring. The friction between these deflective travelling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produces force, causing the rotor to rotate. Attached to the rotor is the focusing lens, which is given a fast, smooth autofocus movement.

Internal Focusing

Focusing elements inside the optical design make for better handling

In many lenses, the front elements move back and forth to alter the focus distance. With an internal focusing (IF) mechanism, the focusing elements are inside the optical design. Because the front lens elements remain static, the lens’ actual length does not change. This provides several benefits both to the image and during photography:

  • The barrel is not subject to stray light entering from external helicoids that can adversely affect image quality
  • A non-rotating front filter thread makes it easier to use filters such as graduated filters and polarisers
  • A flower-shaped lens hood will remain in the correct position to most effectively shield the lens from stray light
  • Better balance and more predictable handling because the lens length does not change during focusing
  • Improved optical performance by minimising loss of illumination at the corners of the image field (vignetting)
  • Suppression of other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.

Fluorine Coating for protection and safe cleaning

The front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellant. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture and fingerprints.

Electromagnetic diaphragm system compatible with Nikon cameras

An electromagnetic diaphragm system, which has been a standard feature for Canon-mount lenses, is employed in Nikon-mount lenses*. More precise diaphragm and aperture control is possible because the diaphragm blades are driven and controlled by a motor through electronic pulse signals.

* Available only with cameras compatible with the electromagnetic diaphragm: D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7000, D7100, D7200, D300, D300s, D600, D610, D700, D750, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D3x, D4, D4s, Df, D500, D5. (As of Jan 2017)

Lightweight, easy-to-hold tripod mount is compatible with an Arca-Swiss type quick-release plate

A new textured grip and Arca-Swiss style tripod interface enhance both speed and utility. And because the tripod mount is made of lightweight magnesium, it is much easier to carry.

Moisture-proof and dust-resistant construction

Ideal for use in outdoor photography, SP 70-200mm G2 offers Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction, thanks to special moisture-proof and dust-resistant sealants used at every joint and seam. The sealant material helps to prevent the intrusion of any dirt, dust or water droplets compared to conventional moisture-resistant construction.

Compatible with the TAMRON TAP-in Console™

The optional TAP-in Console™ provides a USB connection to your personal computer, enabling you to easily update your lens’s firmware as well as customize features including fine adjustments to the AF and VC.

Intuitive design and leading-edge performance

In keeping with the SP series' “Human Touch” design, the A025 is both durably built and user-friendly. The focus and zoom rings, textured grip and Arca-Swiss style tripod interface enhance speed and utility. And like all SP models, this new lens has an ergonomic shape for easy gripping and a lens hood with smooth curves that match the barrel.

Full-time manual focus

Finemanual focus adjustments can be made quickly and easily

The USD motor is complemented by Full-time Manual Focus to enable manual fine-tuning after autofocusing if and when necessary. No need to engage a switch – just gently rotate the focus ring on the lens.
