Sony's new A7 III - An Incredible Feature Set At A Very Fair Price

March 06, 2018

The A7 III is a full frame mirrorless camera that includes all the features that will suit the vast majority of photographers.

If you still need more (or less) features Sony has 6 more models in their A7 line up to choose from.

Sony has matured the full frame mirrorless line to the point where all the pieces of the puzzle just work as expected and now they present an incredible feature set in the A7 III at a "basic" price point. But don't let the word "basic" make you think the A7 III is basic camera. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Here are 11 reasons why you should seriously consider the new A7 III :

  1. At around $3000 for the body only you have full frame 24MP, 10fps shooting and full sensor width 4k video. No other manufacturer even comes close to this feature set at this price point!
  2. In-Body 5 axis 5 stop stabilisation. This works for all lenses and is just not available in most DSLR's.
  3. Best in-class dynamic range. Photographers have been jumping ship to Sony since the original A7's shipped just for this one feature. The new A7 III further pushes the limit to 15 stops.
  4. 24 megapixels is the sweet spot for image resolution for most photographers. If you need more Sony has the A7R III at 42 MP.
  5. Electronic Viewfinders have improved to the point where there really is no downside to using them and in fact the upside is all the additional information that can be presented to the users on screen.
  6. Sony's newer high capacity battery system delivers the shot capacity required for most uses. The optional dual battery grip doubles this.
  7. Constant refinement of the A7 body ergonomics has delivered a truly usable shooting experience that has driven the overwhelming success of the Sony Full Frame mirrorless platform.
  8. Silent shooting is a winning feature that DSLR shooters love when they move to mirrorless.
  9. Sony's A7 line can use pretty well any legacy glass with a wide range of lens adapters available.
  10. Manual focusing is very easy with the A7 series thanks to built in focus peaking overlays.
  11. Sony's eye-tracking focus has to be seen to be believed — it is that good.

First shipments expected at the end of March ..

Sony & Mirrorless DSLR

Sony has been working very hard and alone in the Full Frame Mirrorless market since the introduction of the original A7 and A7r models in October of 2013.

Just 4.5 years have passed and Sony has now introduced their 9th Full Frame SLR  mirrorless camera with the A7 III. This rapid development can not be underestimated! Not even 12 years have passed since Sony acquired Minolta and entered the removable lens camera market. Sony's mirrorless APS-C line only started in 2010. Add to this the simple fact that Sony pretty well controls the world wide market for images sensors and keeps pushing the envelope of what can be achieved in the realm of capturing photons and turning them into digital images.

The truth is that Sony wants to be the number one manufacturer of cameras and with their control of the sensor market and their astounding product release pace they are doing everything they can to win.

So what does all this mean for the photographer looking for a new camera?

The answer is simple.

Sony has matured the full frame mirrorless line to the point where all the pieces of the puzzle just work as expected and now they present an incredible feature set at a "basic" price point. But don't let the word "basic" make you think the A7 III is a basic camera. This couldn't be further from the truth.
