Which Canon Lenses Will Work With Your Camera

August 20, 2020

For many years the major camera manufacturers were so proud that they were able to continue with the same lens mounts despite introducing new features in their cameras which would consequently require different facilities.

According to Wikipedia " The Canon FL lens mount was introduced in April 1964 with the Canon FX camera, replacing the previous Canon R lens mount. The FL mount was in turn replaced in 1971 by the Canon FD lens mountFL lenses can also be used on FD-mount cameras. Many mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras are able to use Canon FL lenses via an adapter."

The evolution of Canon's autofocus SLR cameras has necessitated different series of Canon lenses.  It can be very confusing to determine and understand which is the correct Canon lens that is suitable for your camera.

To assist you, we have compiled a Canon lens compatibility guide which you will find useful

What cameras are compatible with RF Lenses?
Canon’s RF lens mount was developed to work with their new line of mirrorless Full Frame sensor  cameras – If you have a Canon camera with an R in the name, such as the EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS Ra, EOS R and EOS RP, then these lenses are for you.

What cameras work with EF lenses?
The Canon EF mount was released in 1987 and is compatible with most Canon EOS 35mm / Full Frame film and digital SLR cameras released since then. These lenses are also compatible with Canon APS-C DSLR cameras – If your camera has a D in it’s name,  like the EOS 5D, EOS 6D, EOS 7D Mk II, EOS & 1500D, then these lenses are compatible. It’s also possible to adapt EF lenses to RF and EF-M mount cameras.

What cameras work with EF-S lenses?
The EF-S lens mount was designed to work exclusively with Canon’s range of APSC DSLR (Digital SLR) cameras. These cameras have a smaller APS-C sized sensor which means these lenses are not compatible with Full Frame / 35mm sized sensor cameras. To check the compatibility of your camera call us, or google its name and check it’s sensor size specification.

What’s a TS-E stand for and what cameras will it work with?
TS-E lenses are Tilt and Shift lenses designed for special shooting situations, these lenses are favoured for architectural and product photography as well as for creating artistic effects. They are based on an EF mount and can be adapted to most other mounts via adapters.

What cameras work with EF-M Lenses?
The EF-M lens mount was designed for use with Canon’s EOS M mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras that have an APS-C sized sensor – If you your Canon camera has an M in it’s name, like the EOS M200, EOS M6 (Mk I / II), EOS M50 or M5, then these lenses
